Twill Interiors began long before the name existed. As a fashion student in South Africa in the 1990s, Jacqui Mitchell became obsessed with the quiet power of materials and how texture, weight and weave shape the way we live with objects. A move to London opened the door to interior design and a deeper understanding of how layers and honest materials can tell stories that last.

When Jacqui met her builder husband, the creative and the practical finally met in one place. She retrained in interior design at Chelsea College of Arts, pairing a maker’s eye for detail with a grounded respect for how spaces are actually built. Early years designing in Queenstown and later in Tauranga became a working apprenticeship in balancing beauty with buildability, and in delivering rooms that feel effortless on a busy Monday as well as a slow Sunday.

Twill Interiors was founded in 2011, named for the subtle strength of a twill weave. It reflects a philosophy of layered, enduring design that favours materials with integrity. Natural timber with visible grain, wool that softens with time, and finishes that shift gently with the light take precedence over trends. The goal is not spectacle. It is spaces with depth and a voice that lingers, growing with you over decades rather than seasons.

Today the studio works across homes and select commercial spaces throughout the Bay of Plenty and beyond. Jacqui is joined by designers Alex and Lizzy, who bring fresh thinking and care to every project. Alex is known for considered, layered palettes. Lizzy focuses on translating how people live into practical, beautiful solutions. Collaboration is central, whether with trusted suppliers, craftspeople or the clients who invite the team into their lives.
